Welcome to the Online Pathway Program

Dear Language Learners,

We are thrilled to offer a flexible and engaging learning experience. Our classes are held via Zoom, allowing you to participate from home or anywhere with an internet connection. With the convenience of online courses and access to various digital content, you’ll find it easy and accessible to embark on your language-learning journey. Whether you’re a beginner eager to start your Hoocąk language adventure or an advanced student seeking to deepen your understanding, our Online Pathways Program ensures an enjoyable and seamless learning experience. Get ready to immerse yourself in our rich culture and linguistic wonders of Hoocąk, all at your fingertips!

Prerequisites

OPP has undergone an overhaul to suit our Hoocąk Language Learners better. It is suggested that the courses be taken in order (OPP 1A, OPP 1B, OPP 1C, OPP 1D, OPP 2A, OPP 2B). If you have been a dedicated learner of the Hoocąk language and are in OPP 2, you may take a course in OPP 1 to focus on that content.

Attendance policy

The Hoocąk Academy Attendance Policy is in place to demonstrate the commitment of the staff and participants.  Regular attendance by the staff will ensure that the Language Learning Session groups meet the goals and objectives of the program.  Regular attendance by the participants will ensure that each participant reaches their personal language learning goals.  Regular attendance will also ensure that language learning continues steadily for the entire language-learning group.

The Online Pathways Instructors are required to monitor attendance.  All language learning sessions will start and end at the prescribed times.  We ask that participants arrive early or on time for each assigned language learning session ready to begin.  It is understood that perfect attendance is not always achievable, but it is something that each member of the staff and participants can strive toward.

In the event that a participant must be absent, please notify the instructor as early as possible. Language learning activities are planned and may require modifications to the lesson depending on the number of participants in the session. In-person classes only: class materials may need to be mobile. Prior knowledge of absences will assist the instructors in transferring materials from facility to facility.

If participants demonstrate a pattern of excessive unexcused absences (2 or more sessions per month), the staff will attempt to contact them to devise a plan for success in the program. If the participant cannot attend any of the current sessions offered by the Online Pathways Program, that participant will be withdrawn from the program.

~ ATTENDANCE MATTERS ~

Make-up Sessions & Make-up Work Policy

The Hoocąk Academy aims to allow participants to make up missed sessions. The Hoocąk Academy Makeup Session & Makeup Work Policy provides participants who have missed a class with an opportunity to attend another session and complete the required work. Language Learning Zoom Sessions vary and must be coordinated by your assigned instructor.

Attending alternate learning sessions will make makeup sessions and makeup work possible. Since all sessions cover the same content, the work that must be submitted will also be the same. If a participant informs the instructor that they cannot attend a scheduled learning session, they must arrange to attend another.

Inclement weather policy

The Hoocąk Waaziija Haci Language Division of the Heritage Preservation Department of the Ho-Chunk Nation will cancel Language Learning Sessions when the Office of the President grants Administrative Leave due to inclement weather and when local school districts close due to inclement weather.

Incentive Policy

The Hoocąk Academy Policy will be implemented to promote, encourage, and motivate participant contributions to meeting various criteria.  Therefore, throughout the program, incentives will be provided for those individuals who have shown commitment to the program and its goals by:

  • rewarding excellent individual performance
  • attendance
  • recognition of efforts outside of the project scope

Statement for Quality of Instruction

The Hoocąk Academy welcomes intellectual diversity and respects participants’ rights. Participants who have questions concerning the quality of instruction in this class may address concerns to the Hoocąk Waaziija Haci Language Division Education Coordinator. At the end of each session, all participants will have the opportunity to submit an anonymous evaluation of the instructor(s).
